1. How does prophecy describe Satan’s secret strategy to cause multitudes to be lost? Daniel 7:25 NKJV
“He shall speak pompous words against the Most High, shall persecute the saints of the Most High, and shall intend to times and law.”
From the very beginning of time Satan has been at war with God, His people, and law. It is not unusual in war to see one side attack the other’s leadership (the Most High) and even its citizens (the saints). But this prophecy tells us there is more. We see Satan’s secret strategy is to plot “to change times and laws.”
2. Why does Satan plot to change God’s law? Romans 3:20 NKJV
“By the law is the of sin.”
“Sin is the transgression of the law” (1 John 3:4, KJV). God’s Ten Commandments define sin. Without an accurate definition, how could anyone know whether or not they are sinning? And with an inaccurate definition, how easy it is to go blindly astray!
Satan’s strategy to “think to change times and laws” (Daniel 7:25, KJV) has successfully deceived much of society into thinking God’s law is an archaic relic that is irrelevant in modern society. The sad result is seen everywhere—people think killing is not sin, sexual immorality and perversion are not sins, stealing is not sin, lying is not sin, and more! This is just what the devil wants.
3. Why does Satan want people to think God’s law has been changed? Romans 6:23 NKJV
“For the wages of sin is but the gift of God is eternal in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
The devil has two main goals. First, he wants us to continue in deliberate sin so we will die. He hates God and seeks to hurt Him by causing many to be lost. Second, he wants to prevent our accepting Jesus as our Savior. Satan’s strategy is quite simple when you think about it. If the law convicts us of sin, then the law makes us feel our need of the Savior and go to Him to be saved (Romans 7:7-25). However, if we think there is no law, then we will not feel our need of a Savior. And we won’t go to Jesus. Is it any wonder that true Christianity has nearly disappeared in societies that have cast away God’s law?
Take a moment to read the commandments. Then summarize each law in your own words in the space below. You will find they are a simple, straightforward, and concise rule for living. You would hope everyone could support such a law, wouldn’t you? But in these last days many don’t.
4. What is God’s law? Where can we find it? Exodus 20:1-17
This response will be awarded full points automatically, but it will be reviewed and possibly adjusted after submission.
5. How does prophecy describe society’s moral condition in the last days? 2 Timothy 3:1-5 NKJV
“In the last days times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without selfcontrol, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, head-strong, haughty, lovers of rather than lovers of God, having a of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!”
This description of the last days is right on the mark! It suggests that two groups buy into Satan’s agenda to do away with God’s law. First, there are the “lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.” While this can include Christians, it certainly describes secular humanism as a whole.
Secular humanism views God and His law as an obstacle to the pursuit of pleasure. But the more Western society becomes secularized, the more sorrow results. Casting off the restraints of God’s law has caused us to lose the blessings of protection it provides.
The second group revealed might surprise you—they “have a form of godliness but deny its power.” This group takes on the forms of Christianity, but denies God gives power to obey. Jesus says they call Him “Lord” and do wonderful things in the name of Christianity, but they “practice lawlessness” (Matthew 7:21-23). Obviously, even Christians can be, and have been, tricked by the enemy who “intends to change times and laws.”
6. Did the devil really get some Christians to further his plot to change God’s law? 2 Timothy 4:3, 4 NKJV
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound , but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to .”
The apostle Paul understood Daniel’s prophecies and he warned the fledgling church that “from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves” (Acts 20:28-30). False teachers would be “heaped up” and widely accepted in the church. After the apostles died, Satan successfully introduced unbiblical doctrine, which produced a form of “Christianity” that promoted his strategy to “change times and laws.” What are these unsound teachings that lead many to suppose God’s law has been done away with? Let’s examine five false teachings and see how the Bible counters them. Don’t be too shocked if you have heard these taught before.
7. The first false teaching is “Since we are saved by grace, we no longer need to keep God’s law.” Does the Bible really teach God’s grace frees us from responsibility to obey His law?
a. “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” Romans 6:1, 2 NKJV
b. “For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace?
!” Romans 6:14, 15 NKJV
Paul met this false teaching in his day. His emphatic answer should forever settle it—God’s grace doesn’t do away with the law. Once we are saved by grace, our love for God makes us more careful to obey.
8. The second false teaching says, “We don’t have to keep the Ten Commandments because we are under the law of love.” Does the Bible teach the “law of love” replaced God’s law? Matthew 22:35-40 NKJV
“Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments all the law and the Prophets.’ “
Jesus didn’t introduce two new commandments that replace the ten as some teach. These two laws weren’t new at all. Jesus quoted them from the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 6:4; Leviticus 19:18).
Jesus summarized the law into two principles: love to God and love to our fellow man. “These two commandments sum up” the law (Matthew 22:40, Amplified Bible). He could have said it in one word. Love. But “love” is an ill-defined word. Someone might incorrectly assume they “love” a person even though they are abusing them.
God doesn’t define love by our fickle feelings. His definition is indelibly written in stone. The first four commandments define how to love God. The last six show us how to love our fellow man. If it weren’t for the commandments, we wouldn’t know how to love God or man. Love doesn’t cancel the law at all. If we love, as Jesus said we should, we will keep His law (John 14:15).
9. The third false teaching is, “Jesus fulfilled the law so we don’t have to.” Does Jesus’ obedience replace our need to obey? Mat thew 5:17-19 NKJV
“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to but to fulfill.”
Think about how dangerous this teaching really is. Because Jesus didn’t commit adultery, we can? Or because He didn’t murder, we can? Take any of the commandments and see how absurd this is. Jesus’ meaning is crystal clear—He didn’t destroy the law. As long as the heavens and earth stand, not one part of the law will pass away. And anyone who breaks or teaches others to break the least of the commandments will be called least in the kingdom. It doesn’t sound like Jesus was saying we don’t need to obey God’s law. Jesus made His desire plainly known, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15).
10. The fourth false teaching: “Old Testament Israel needed to keep the law for salvation, but New Testament Christians are saved by grace.” Does the Bible really say there are two different ways to be saved? John 14:6 NKJV
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father through Me.”
This is a very heretical teaching because it says there are two “dispensations” in which people were saved by two different methods: 1) keeping the law in the Old Testament, 2) and grace in the New Testament. Let’s be clear—there is only one way to be saved and that is through Jesus Christ. No Old Testament person was ever saved by their works. They were saved by grace just like us. “Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord” (Genesis 6:8).
11. How was salvation by grace available to Old Testament people? Hebrews 4:2 NKJV
“For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to .”
The “them” of this verse is Old Testament people. (See Hebrews 3:16-19.) The gospel was preached to them in the symbols of sacrificial animals and sanctuary services. “Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us” (1 Corinthians 5:7). These all pointed to Jesus’ death and resurrection life. There never was power in the sacrifices themselves to save anyone. It was only as sinners looked forward to Calvary that the sacrifices led them to salvation through faith in Christ (Psalm 51:16, 17). We who live in the New Testament look back by faith at the cross. Regardless of whether a person lived before the cross or after, salvation is always through faith in the shed blood of Jesus.
12. The fifth false teaching says, “If you try to obey God’s law, you are trying to earn salvation.” Does the Bible condemn humble obedience? Ephesians 2:8-10 NKJV
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good which God prepared beforehand that we should in them.”
Obedience can never earn salvation. Salvation is completely a free gift from God. But when we give our lives to Jesus, we become “a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17, KJV). As new creatures in Christ, we are created “for good works” which God intends for us to walk in.
13. The Bible clearly unmasks the secret of Satan’s strategy, but weren’t some laws
changed? Do we need to keep the Old Testament laws of sacrifices? Hebrews 10:1-10 NKJV
“For the law, having a of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same , which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect… For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins… Then He said, ‘Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.’ He away the first that He may establish the second.”
The ceremonial laws were taken away at Jesus’ death. Animal sacrifices, circumcision, Passover, Day of Atonement, and other sanctuary ceremonies were “shadows” illustrating salvation in Christ. Now that Jesus, “the very image of the things,” has come we don’t need the shadows. But we do keep His moral Ten Commandments. They are not shadows. “Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping the commandments of God is what matters” (1 Corinthians 7:19).
14. Is it your desire to demonstrate your love for God by obeying His commandments?
